What do you think about having different decorating themes for each room in the house?
Is it tacky> Or should every room in the house have the same theme? My cousing has different themes for each room in her house. For ex. she has a "Cape Cod’ room which is the den. A "Victorian room" which is the family room. A "Tuscan room" which is the kitchen. A "French room" which is her bedroom.
That is what my house is! I love it. If you get bored with a room-change it instead of the whole freaking house! I have a western room, a pop art room, a travel room , the office is sports, my kitchen used to be all shades of green. You can use a theme to unify it like "places" and have each room be a different place:morroccin (sp?) , Mexico, Frech, Beach, whatever. Or "Color" and have each room be different shades of color , red room, green room, yellow room, etc. The possibilities are endless!
I LOVE it. I gives the house some personality. It says, " Im happy in one room, then im tranquil, then im crazy, or just I dont know". Tell your cousin that he or she should definately do it. And its not tacky, its refreshingly different.

As an interior designer, we have done several projects wherein different rooms in the same home had different themes. However, when we do that, we generally carry something common, like one color into every room to unify, connect and ground the home.
For example, in my own home, my powder room is a safari theme, the living room outside of it is a medieval castle theme, the dining room connected to it is an Asian theme and the family room connected to that is a cigar smoking, gasthof/pub theme. It is the ceiling color, wood tones on furniture and trim and the type of flooring that is common in all of the rooms. When you look through to all of these rooms connected together, it does not appear that you are in a theme park traveling through unrelated, incongruent areas.

that’s cool, but all the rooms should have something in common, like the colors or the paintings of tha walls or the same principle.

Everyone’s home should reflect their tastes and personality, and it sound as tho your cousin is a pretty diverse individual and isn’t afraid to "color outside the lines." The particular styles she has chosen could work well together since they have some common colors and other characteristics. For example, much of the decor from the Victorian era emulated settings seen in travel in France and other European countries. It’s a pretty eclectic style in and of itself. Cape Cod, to my understanding, is a style grounded in furnishings found in those same families’ summer homes. I think so long as one room flows visually into the next with creative use of color, her idea could actually be quite nice.

I have a two story house. And most of my bedrooms are upstairs except for one.
Downstairs I try to stick to a "theme" so the flow is better. Which is a tuscany theme. My half bath is Ole World theme., my formal living room and dining rooms are done in a tusan them as well as my kitchen.
The bedroom downstairs and full bath for the bedroom is done the way my daughter likes it….ALL IT PINK! And ballernia’s.
Upstairs….it is what we like. My boys bathroom is done is a safari theme. My oldest room is a basketball them. My two younger boys share a room and it is done in blues. Master bed and bath is done in Colonial style in keeping with our houses structure.
Your house really is who you are. Do you house the way you want. Image you were a visiter coming and decorate from there. I always want my visitors or guest to fell very comfortable and welcome.
ANd I want my house to have an open airy feeling.
Good Luck, I am sure whatever you decide to decorate it will be just great.

Personally, I think its a little more than tacky. When rooms are painted unrelated colors- reminds me of the circus. Don’t stick to certain "themes" rooms can look too planned and decorated. You’ve got to carry through the baseboards, type of trim, and wall color type (pastels, historic, dark, bright) throughout the house. I think that’s number one to acheiving a flowing and comfortable enviornment. Jolts between rooms are not fun, they are tacky. Look at the high end designers and architects. you don’t see them turning their client’s houses into circuses, do you?
