What are some good essay themes in the Harry Potter series?

Im writing a theme paper for a freshmen college english paper and I’d like to do it on Harry Potter. I need to find out some themes from the series that I can write on. Preferable abstract. This paper needs to be 20+ pages so the more themes the better!

How about you write on the role of adults in the series. Are they really essential to the plot or do they serve merely as foils?

  2. Acceptance. – You have a gay headmaster, as well as black and indian students attending the school, and each are very valuable characters. You could also talk about how Voldemort and the Death Eaters and how their mass muggle and muggle-born killing are examples of anti-tolerance. I often find that Harry Potter books have lessons that you can learn similar to that of the Holocaust.

Mental Disorders- If you have any knowledge pertaining to psychology, you could look at some of the characters which are less than stable. For example, Voldemort could be considered someone who has antisocial disorder or sadism.

Enduring hope and willpower- Even though Harry was constantly bombarded with pain and loss, he never gave up.

Adolescence- You could ignore magic all together, and look at how they grow up and the difficulties they endure with friendships and heartbreak, and how it relates to real life.

The undervalued- For years Neville Longbottom was an outcast, and the slow one. Soon you realize that he has gone through a great deal of pain in his life. By the end of the book, he is proven to be invaluable in the ending of Voldemort’s regime.

Rebellion- Harry and his friends are working towards the greater good, but in order to do that, they have to break lots of school rules. Even Dumbledore often breaks rules when he deems necessary.
