Actually, a much simpler way to install a theme you downloaded, is to drag with your mouse the archive inside the System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Theme window. That will take care of it! No terminal for newbies :-)

Of course, if the theme needs a non-standard engine, you’ve still got to compile it by hand. :-p

Almost forgot, if you also want your terminal window transparent like NIxie’s and the way I did mine, open the terminal, Click Edit on the terminal window, Click Profiles, highlight the default (unless you’ve already customized) and click edit, click on the background tab and select transparent background and use the slider to set the amount of opacity that you would like and voila, transparent terminal window. :) Thanks Nixie for a great group of Linux Tuts.

Just a couple of things to note, on a stock install the first time you change your appearance settings to Extra, you’ll need to install video card drivers and reboot. And on the Slickness black installation, not sure if this was the same for anyone else, but I had to install the icons and the ubuntulooks engine. After that all was well.
