Series 60 detroit overheating?

my series 60 detroit engine overheats on the hill goes over 220 just before, red light turn on. on plain road temperature is good. I change radiator thinking was that, change prestone & water every 4months. but still the same.

Overheating, check the thermostat, hoses, and radiator. Since you already replaced the radiator and deem it fit, then the thermostat is likely the culprit, as something is not allowing a fluid flow.

  1. On mine it was the water pump.

  2. check fan blades and clutch, make sure shroud is in the right position to bring air flow through radiator, check for missing shroud flaps from hood. may need new thermostat. hope this helps…

  3. Sounds like your fan is not coming on. You can install a switch to turn the fan on manually. Is the air switch to the fan working properly? Does the fan clutch work? It could also be one thermostat is stuck closed, but probably not. The fan would still cool it down. If both thermostats were stuck closed it would overheat on just a small pull.

In any case, it is not good to overheat the engine. It can warp or crack the head or blow the head gasket and then you will be looking at a $5000 repair.

It’s really hard to tell with the limited information here. If you want to get further into it, feel free to e mail me.
