What is the best OCR (optical character recognition) program to try out as shareware or freeware?

I need it to be compatible with a HP all-in-one, but I’m sure most are. Oh, and besides IRIS…I just downloaded that one. And what are some of you guys’ favorite applications for OCR?

Omnipage is my favorite. it even allows you to take a digital picture of a page and convert that picture to text.

My Obligatory Shareware game for the day =D

Tubes is another matching puzzle type game, in the vein of Columns, Gems and the latter games like Puzzle fighter. In this game you catch different elements in beakers and chain them together to form “molecules”. There are also all sorts of other molecules that can help or greatly hurt you (like the grey coloured Xenon molecule, which does nothing and just gets in the way until you can find a way to blow it up). Overall a pretty fun and interesting game.

Where is a good place for Mac shareware?

I’m a new Mac owner and was wondering where the best place would be to download shareware? I need a good html editor and FTP client. Thanks.

The one thing I like about both sites is that you can filter your search results by licence type. For example, you can choose to only view a list of freeware, shareware or commercial software.

FTP Client

Obscure Shareware Game: Brix (1994, Epic Megagames)

Like many games released by Epic Megagames, Brix, a puzzle game of matching blocks, features a rich soundtrack of module based music. This game can be pretty addictive but at the same time, it is very simple. I used to play this game a fair bit when I was a kid and it’s still fun today!

Is there any way to bypass the restrictions on shareware software?

The shareware I am talking about is programs with full functionality, but only work for a set amount of time. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it "knows" that I have already used all my allotted time. I also tried deleteing all registry values relating to the program and even downloading the installer from a different IP address.

Deleting files from the registry is an extremely risky exercise.
The registry entry is well disguised with a file name irrelevant to the program.
Delete the wrong one and at best you might lose functionality of a program and have to re-install. At worst, crash your computer completely.
The programmers are aware that attempts will be made to steal their software and are well ahead of the game when it comes to prevention of theft.
The only legal way to bypass the restrictions is to purchase the software.

Shareware Legends: Rescue Rover (1991, Softdisk/ID Software)

Rescue Rover is a computer puzzle game from id Software, published by Softdisk in 1991. The game was distributed as shareware, with the first 10 levels making up the shareware version, and another 20 levels being present in the registered version.
This is one of several games written by id to fulfill their contractual obligation to produce games for Softdisk, where the id founders formerly were employed. A sequel, Rescue Rover 2, soon followed. Roger and Rover are the names of the 2 main characters. Rover the dog is frequently kidnapped by robots, and it is the player’s (Roger the owner) job to enter into robot territory get him back, hence the name “Rescue Rover”.

Check out the famous names in the credits at the start. This game launched legends!

P.S. Sorry for sucking. This is one of the few more famous shareware games I actually never really got to play as a youngster.

Edit:

Apparently this game was originally made as part of the “Gamers Edge” subscription service and was only broken up into shareware after the departure of ID personnel. So says a little bird ^_^

How do I copy shareware games to cd?

How do I go about getting shareware games that I have downloaded from the internet on to a cd/dvd? And after getting them on the cd or dvd, how do I make a simple menu or something for the user to choose which game he/she chooses to play when the disk is loaded on to the computer?

Im assuming this is legal, correct me if im wrong.

hmmm.. most shareware games that I know need to be installed on your computer before they will run.. ie.. info in your registry, etc.

if you do have games that will run just by clicking on their .exe file.. you can build a cd with shortcuts in the disk directory… keep in mind that they may only work with your computer.. or one with the same drive letter for the CD-drive
